Liberal Democrats select Diana Wallis MEP to head list of European Parliamentary Candidates for Yorkshire and the Humber Region11.15.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 21st Nov 2007 The Liberal Democrats in Yorkshire and the Humber have announced their candidates for the European Parliament elections in 2009. The candidates were elected by the whole Liberal Democrat membership across the Yorkshire and the Humber region.
Diana Wallis MEP, who has represented the Yorkshire and the Humber region for the Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament since 1999, was elected in the number one spot with an overwhelming 71% of first preference votes. Commenting, Diana Wallis MEP, a Vice-President of the European Parliament, said: "I am delighted that Liberal Democrat members across Yorkshire and the Humber have given me such a ringing endorsement. I look forward to leading a strong field of candidates in this region to contest the next elections to the European Parliament. "Liberal Democrat MEPs play a vital role in the European Parliament, promoting measures to tackle critical EU wide issues such as climate change and ensuring that the European Union is held accountable to the public. "I look forward to seeing an even stronger Liberal Democrat representation from Yorkshire and the Humber in the European Parliament after the elections in 2009." The candidates were elected using the Single Transferable Vote system by Liberal Democrat members in each English region. Currently Yorkshire & the Humber has six seats in the European Parliament Candidates for Yorkshire and the Humber Region have been selected in the order listed below: 1. Diana Wallis 2.
